Discord: a guide for parents

Discord is organised into 'servers' — anything from a 5-friend chat to a 200,000-member public community, with voice channels, DMs and file sharing built in. Two big changes matter for parents. First, under the UK Online Safety Act every UK account — new and existing — now gets age-appropriate default settings, including automatic filtering of sensitive content, and anything flagged 18+ (age-restricted channels, servers and explicit media) is locked until the user proves they're an adult, usually via a facial age scan or ID. Second, Discord has announced a global 'teen-by-default' model where unverified accounts worldwide get the teen experience; after a privacy backlash over its verification vendors, the global rollout was pushed back to the second half of 2026 — but the UK rules are already in force.

Ask which servers they're in and who runs them — public vs friends-only matters more than the app itself.
Set up Family Centre together rather than in secret — you see servers and friends, not message content, which keeps trust intact.
Review privacy and contact settings together. If unwanted content appears, help them report it without blaming them or assuming how it got through.
